The sound of school bells, morning assembly and excited conversations has returned to schools across Ghana as Kindergarten, primary and Junior High School pupils begin the 2026/2027 academic year.
Basic schools across the country officially reopened on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, marking the beginning of the first term of the new academic year. According to the approved Ghana Education Service (GES) calendar, the first term will run for 15 weeks and end on December 17, 2026.
For pupils returning to school, however, a new academic year is more than simply returning to the classroom.
It is a fresh opportunity to learn something new, make new friends, discover talents, improve academic performance and develop skills that can shape the future.
A NEW YEAR, A NEW OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN
The 2026/2027 academic year will give pupils another opportunity to strengthen their knowledge in subjects such as English Language, Mathematics, Science, Computing, Social Studies, Creative Arts and other areas of learning. But education is not only about passing examinations.
Schools also provide opportunities for children to develop curiosity, creativity, communication, teamwork, leadership, problem-solving and responsible citizenship.
This is particularly important as Ghana continues to place greater emphasis on STEM education, digital skills, creativity and practical learning.
The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NaCCA) has described Ghana’s curriculum as one intended to equip learners with competencies relevant to the country’s development, including creativity, digital technology, entrepreneurship and problem-solving.
For young learners, this means that the classroom can become a place not only for receiving information but also for asking questions, investigating problems and developing ideas.
WELCOME BACK, YOUNG SCHOLARS
The 2026/2027 academic year has begun.
Across Ghana, classrooms are filling again with pupils carrying books, wearing uniforms, meeting teachers and preparing to learn.
Some will make remarkable academic improvements.
Some will win competitions.
Some will discover new talents.
Some will conduct their first mini-research project.
Some will build their first invention.
Some will write their first story.
And some may begin developing the idea that eventually changes their community.
So, as you begin another school year, remember:
Read more. Ask questions. Think creatively. Be curious. Try new things. Help others. And never stop learning.
Your classroom may be the place where your future begins.
