THE FUTURE IS DIGITAL: WHY GHANA’S CHILDREN MUST START LEARNING THE SKILLS OF TOMORROW TODAY
The world around us is changing rapidly. Computers, smartphones, artificial intelligence, robotics and other digital technologies are becoming part of everyday life, transforming the way people communicate, learn, work, travel, conduct business and solve problems.
For children growing up in Ghana today, the digital world will be an important part of their future. The jobs they eventually enter may look very different from many of the jobs that exist today, while new careers that are still unfamiliar to many children could become common in the years ahead.
This means that education is no longer only about learning what is already known. Children also need opportunities to develop the ability to think creatively, solve problems, use technology responsibly, communicate ideas and continue learning as technology changes.
For pupils in basic school, the journey into the digital future can begin with simple skills. Learning how to use a computer, understanding how information is presented online, exploring coding, experimenting with digital tools and learning how to identify reliable information can gradually build the foundation for more advanced skills in the future.
GHANA MOVES TOWARDS CODING, ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND ELECTRONICS
Ghana’s education system is also beginning to place greater attention on emerging technologies.
In July 2026, the Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, announced plans connected to a revised basic-school curriculum that would introduce areas including coding, artificial intelligence, electronics, ethics and TVET-related learning into basic education.
The proposed changes were intended to expose children to modern skills at an earlier stage of their education. However, at the time of the announcement, the revised curriculum was still subject to the required approval processes. This means pupils and parents should understand the announcement as a proposed curriculum development rather than assuming that every new subject had already been fully implemented nationwide.
The proposed direction is significant because it reflects a changing understanding of what children need to learn in a world increasingly influenced by digital technology.
A child who learns the basics of coding today may eventually develop software. A pupil interested in electronics may become an engineer. Another student fascinated by artificial intelligence may eventually work in data science, robotics, machine learning or another technology-related field.
A NEW DIGITAL WORLD IS EMERGING IN GHANA’S SCHOOLS
The movement towards digital learning is not limited to curriculum discussions. In 2026, Ghana and South Korea launched a programme reported to involve approximately US$28 million in support for digital STEM education, with plans to expand areas such as coding, robotics and artificial intelligence among learners in Ghanaian primary schools over the coming years.
The programme forms part of a broader effort to strengthen digital STEM education and expose children to technologies that are increasingly important in modern society.
For a child, this could mean that concepts that once seemed to belong only to university laboratories may increasingly become part of school learning.
Artificial intelligence, robotics and coding are no longer simply subjects for adults working in technology companies. They are becoming areas that children can begin exploring through age-appropriate educational activities.
CODING TEACHES CHILDREN HOW TO THINK
Coding is sometimes described as a language for computers, but it also develops important ways of thinking.
When children code, they learn that a large problem can be broken down into smaller steps. They learn to follow sequences, identify errors and make corrections. If a programme does not work, the learner has to investigate what went wrong. This process is known as debugging.
The same thinking can be applied outside computers. A child trying to solve a mathematics problem, organize a school project or understand a community challenge can also benefit from breaking a large problem into smaller parts.
That is why coding is not only about becoming a programmer. It can also help children develop logical thinking, patience, creativity and problem-solving skills.
