YOUNG MINDS, BIG IDEAS: GHANA’S BASIC-SCHOOL STUDENTS ARE DISCOVERING THE WORLD OF RESEARCH AND INNOVATION
Research and innovation are often associated with universities, laboratories and scientists working with sophisticated equipment, but the journey into research can begin much earlier. Across Ghana, programmes, competitions and school-based initiatives are creating opportunities for children to develop curiosity, investigate problems and think about practical solutions while they are still in basic school.
For a pupil who looks around the classroom and wonders why some students struggle to read, why rubbish continues to accumulate around the school, why some plants grow better than others, why water is sometimes unavailable or how technology could make everyday activities easier, that simple observation can become the beginning of a research project. The most important starting point is curiosity.
Research does not always begin with expensive equipment or complicated scientific language. Sometimes, it begins with a simple question about something a child sees every day. A pupil may wonder why the school compound becomes littered after break time, why some classmates rarely visit the library, why a particular area of the community floods when it rains or why some crops grow poorly in a school garden. Such questions can encourage learners to move beyond simply observing a problem and begin investigating what is actually happening.
WHEN A SIMPLE QUESTION BECOMES RESEARCH
A young researcher learns to look more closely at ordinary situations. Instead of simply saying that there is too much rubbish in the school, the pupil can investigate where the rubbish comes from, which types of waste are most common, where the waste accumulates, whether enough bins are available and how frequently the waste is collected.
The pupil can then begin gathering evidence through careful observation, simple counting, conversations with teachers and classmates, or a small survey conducted with appropriate permission. Through this process, the learner begins to understand that research is not about guessing an answer. It is about asking questions and finding evidence that can help explain a situation.
This distinction is important because what appears to be the cause of a problem may not always be the real cause. A pupil may believe that students do not read because they dislike books, but further investigation could reveal that the school has too few books, that the available books are not suitable for the pupils’ age groups or that students do not have enough opportunities to use the library.
The research process therefore encourages young learners to remain open-minded. A researcher begins with an idea but allows the evidence to guide the conclusion.
GHANA’S YOUNG ROBOTICS INNOVATORS
Technology is providing another exciting pathway through which basic-school students can experience innovation. The Ghana Robotics Competition has a dedicated Techs League for primary and junior-high-school students, giving young learners the opportunity to participate in robotics and technology-related challenges.
The competition encourages participants to work together, develop solutions and apply technology to practical problems. The 2026 competition includes challenges connected to areas such as smart farming, technology connectivity and solar power, creating opportunities for young participants to think about how technology can respond to real needs.
For a basic-school pupil, building a robot is therefore much more than making a machine move. It can involve understanding a problem, thinking about how technology might help, designing a solution, testing it and improving the design when something does not work.
The 2026 Ghana Robotics Competition is scheduled to hold its grand finale from October 7 to 9, with primary and JHS students participating through the Techs League.
The experience demonstrates an important lesson for young learners: technology becomes much more meaningful when it is connected to problems that people actually experience.
WHEN A COMMUNITY PROBLEM BECOMES A RESEARCH PROJECT
Imagine a group of pupils noticing that a large quantity of plastic waste is produced around their school every day. Their first reaction might be to say that students should stop littering. However, young researchers can take the matter further by investigating the problem.
They could study the amount and types of waste produced during different periods of the school day. They could observe where waste accumulates most frequently and investigate whether the school has enough waste bins. They could speak with teachers, pupils and other members of the school community, with appropriate permission, to understand how waste is handled. After collecting and examining the information, the pupils might discover that the problem is connected to several factors rather than one single cause. They could then think about possible solutions, such as improving waste collection, introducing awareness campaigns or developing a recycling project.
The important thing is that the pupils would have moved from simply complaining about a problem to understanding it through evidence and thinking about a practical response.
That is the beginning of research and innovation.
JHS STUDENTS ARE BEING ENCOURAGED TO SOLVE REAL PROBLEMS
The Ghana Science and Tech Explorer Challenge Prize, commonly known as GSTEP, is another initiative that demonstrates the potential of young researchers. The programme is designed for Junior High School students aged 11 to 16 and teachers and focuses on developing practical Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics skills while encouraging participants to create products that can benefit their communities.
The approach is particularly important because it connects classroom learning with everyday life. Instead of treating science and technology as subjects that exist only in textbooks, learners are encouraged to use what they know to understand and respond to challenges around them.
A pupil interested in farming, for example, may investigate how different watering methods affect plant growth. Another pupil may become interested in water conservation after noticing that water is frequently wasted at school. Another may explore ways of improving waste management in the community.
Each of these interests can become the starting point for a mini-research project.
THE FUTURE NEEDS CURIOUS MINDS
Ghana’s future researchers, scientists, engineers, inventors, entrepreneurs and technology leaders are already sitting in classrooms across the country.
They may be Primary 4 pupils. They may be Primary 6 pupils. They may be JHS 1, JHS 2 or JHS 3 students.
They may not yet know what profession they will eventually choose, but they can begin developing the qualities that future researchers need. They can learn to be curious, observe carefully, ask questions, seek evidence, work with others, think creatively and remain honest about what they discover.
The journey into research does not have to wait until university.
It can begin with a question asked in a classroom.
It can begin with a problem noticed on a school compound.
It can begin with a notebook in the hands of a curious child.
And it can begin today.
A QUESTION CAN BECOME RESEARCH. RESEARCH CAN BECOME AN IDEA. AN IDEA CAN BECOME AN INNOVATION.
The next great Ghanaian researcher or inventor may already be in a basic-school classroom — looking around, asking questions and imagining a better future.
